Make it a point to post on your site at least once a week for the sake of consistency.

If you're going to create a following it has to be built upon people who count our your creating interesting content for them to read and share.

Read other peoples sites and post comments so that they and their readers will want to track back to your site and learn more about you, the interesting commenter who also has a cool blog site.

Don’t know what social media is? New to blogging? It’s all the same actually.

How to get started, you say? One at a time.

Create accounts on the big four (Facebook, Twitter, Google +, and LinkedIn) and spend a day just fooling around on each.

Trust me you won’t break them and piddling around in each for a few hours at a time is the best way to learn them.

If you have a business, a cause, or if you’re a personality of some sort you should definitely have a Facebook Like page and a Google + page. You have to create personal profiles on each of them first though. You can also create a corporate business profile on Twitter. And LinkedIn is all about business. You can create LinkedIn group to expand your network too if your cause, business or genre of work is significant enough to have others join in on the professional networking and conversation.
