How to Embed A Google Map

Easy as pie. When you go to Google Maps and plug in the address you want to share or you see one on a blog/web site that you want to share, here’s how you plug it into the site you’re editing.

At the top right corner of the map you will see three options, Print, Send and Link. Click on Link and it generates two sets of code. The first gives you the option to post a web link into an email or IM (text message). The second creates the HTML embed code you can add to your web site or to a particular blog post that you’re writing.

Copy and paste the code and you’ll get a Google map like I have above. It will be fully functional with the usual capabilities to zoom in or out for greater or lesser surrounding geographic detail, the travel to or from address feature and the nearby search link.

Conveying a Level of Professionalism From Home

For some, working for home is a license to be totally comfortable and have a lax attitude. While working from home is indeed very flexible, you also have to be careful to not come across as “too” casual and give your clients a sense that you’re not serious about their business. It’s important to convey a level of professionalism in all situations whether that’s in handling phone calls or in billing clients. The comforts of home can sometimes creep up on the homeworker and make them feel as if they don’t have to try as hard or do as much as the corporate worker. Not so! As a matter-of-fact, you must try even harder because you need to be taken seriously as a business person. Here are some things to do to ensure that you stay professional:

1. Answer the phone in a professional manner. Even if you don’t have a separate phone line between home and work, you can still be professional. Instead of the basic “hello”, try answering with, “this is ____”. This will make you sound professional and as if you’re answering the phone at your desk (which you are). I’ve gotten into the habit of doing this both with my business line and with my cell phone. I often do business on my cell phone and when I answer with “this is Bridget”, it changes the entire tone of the phone call and we can conduct business in a professional manner.

2. Eliminate background noise. This goes in line with the phone answering, but this primarily means to eliminate distractions so that you can focus. Now I love to crank up Fergie about as much as the next person, but be careful that you don’t bob and weave your head so much that you type in the wrong information on your proposal. Let Fergie loose AFTER you’ve sent the email off.

3. Display and enforce your office hours. Wait, that’s only if you’ve established office hours, which I hope you have. When you keep office hours, it keeps you organized and keeps (hopefully) others from distracting you when you’re not “working”. This is a huge deal for those who work from home, so look for a lot more posts from me on how to establish and keep your office hours firm. It’s very important for your professional image and keeps you from worker burnout.

What other things can you do to stay professional?

- Dress for work every morning.

- Put on makeup (for ladies…and men too if you roll like that!)

- Be at your desk at the starting time of your office hours.

- Take a designated lunch break.

- Look in a mirror while you’re on the phone. Image is everything!

Stay tuned for LOTS more tips and advice on how you can stay professional working from home and other great information about the work-from-home lifestyle. This is going to be a fun ride!

Public Speaking 101 For the Street Hustler

Ever wonder why the hot man (street hustler) seems to struggle so? Besides the fact that he probably didn’t get his wares honestly, the average steet-side, public transit, towel and candy bar seller’s sales pitch just sucks really bad. There’s typically nothing customer service oriented about their approach that would make most people say “Yeah, I’ll pay $75 for that white gold chain of questionable origin”.

Picture this. You’re on a Chicago Transit Authority “L” (elevated) train, the recorded public service announcement reminds passengers to be polite and keep their music to themselves and that no solicitation of passengers is allowed on CTA trains. Then, as if he timed it intentionally, in walks Mr. Hustler (haven’t seen any women trying this yet but in these times that’ll probably change) making his grand entrance into your car from the one behind you.

Even if he has a hint of verbal personality, he typically isn’t dressed that well and just doesn’t look really clean. Shady is the first word that comes to your mind. Not a towel, sock or candy bar am I buying from this dude.

Then there’s the otherwise average, upstanding looking guy with no personality at all. He simply walks through the rail car, kind of leaning side to side alternating between both rows of passengers, showing the riders his open box of Kit-Kat’s or Snickers, saying nothing or something along the lines of, “Want some candy?”, and being lucky to move his product at all. Dude just looks suspect. Now, this approach might possibly work on some school kids but they probably have something they are trying to sell for school. In general though, they seem to be totally ineffective because I personally haven’t seen one of these guys actually make a sale.

These fellas need serious tips from people who do it well. They could take the best hints from the bleacher concession sellers at US Cellular Field and Wrigley Field (insert your favorite stadium in your city/town). Just buy a cheap ticket to either team and observe one game. Not the baseball game, the selling game. The best hawkers, well, they hawk. The best hot dog and beer sellers have the best speech as a part of their presentation. Fans wait for them to come around, cash in hand, flagging them down like a hitch hiker whose radiator just overheated.

My old Cub Scouts could sell circles around some of these street dudes. It’s because I taught them a reliable pitch and they dressed the part. People can’t resist helping a clean cut grade school boy in a Cub Scout uniform with his official Boy Scout popcorn. Our pitch went something like this. “Hello, my name is (insert Cub Scout name) and I’m with Pack (insert pack number). I’m selling popcorn to earn money for badges, activities and camp. Would you like to buy two or three boxes or cans today?” I told them to always ask for more than they wanted because we adults always want less than someone wants to sell us. It practically guaranteed a consistent sale of one box/can. And sometimes they really did get multiple sales from one person or household.

If I were to be a hustler consultant I’d recommend similar advice. Here’s the package that moves product.

1. Perception is EVERYTHING!!! Dress in clean, ironed clothes. Not stylish, just clean. Pants that are your actual size and on your waist with a belt. No sagging (I can’t buy something from a dude who looks like he may have been scratching his butt five seconds earlier). I repeat, perception is EVERYTHING!!!

2. Well timed entrance into each car, candy bar box(es) open.

3. “Good morning/afternoon/evening everyone. My name is (insert hustler name) and I’m providing an assortment of sweet treats today. Would you like you like a Twix, Hershey, Hubba-Bubba snack pack today?”

4. Say this loud enough for at least twenty people to hear you clearly and then do the “lean side to side to each row” and ask each passenger, “how about you mam, how about you sir?”

5. Divide the car into fourths and repeat three more times for a total of four presentations per car.

First, you’ve set yourself apart from the more illiterate sounding hustlers and you’ve taken advantage of the public’s need to say no. Most people won’t go for the snack pack deal – although some will – but more are likely to say they’ll take one or two items. Either way you’re finally moving product consistently. No need to look or act thug (That only attracts other thugs and they don’t necessarily have any cash on them). I’m not judging, just sharing tips that pay.

Finally, if you have hustler friends who think this is the only way they can make it in the world, share this information with them. You’ve helped them to be more effective and who knows, maybe improved performance will elevate their minds to consider more legitimate sales professions or career aspirations. It could happen.

General Heart Health and Preventive Ookie Killer

I’m beginning to get a little concerned hearing about so many of you with heart problems and other ailments on major drugs to keep the ticker and other tissues in check. Well you know we here at MartyBLOGs are big time actionists so I’m going to make a serious proactive suggestion to you. I have quite a few friends with heart problems in particular. The plants listed below are known to be cleansing for the body in general and for the heart and blood in particular.

For you heart patients, diabetics and people with other common major ailments why don’t you give it a try, then tell your doctor about your efforts to be more proactive about your health? They likely already want you to have a better diet than you’re used to providing for yourself so here’s a start. I’ll bet you anything you’ll start coming off of some of those meds because you’ll be helping your body to heal itself (or at least put less pressure on your organs) slowly but surely over time.

Not to mention what you can do for your overall health when you simply begin seasoning your cooking with these same ingredients. Heal yourself and improve your home cheffing skills all at once.

O.K. so here’s the recipe:Two cloves of garlic
A few slivers of ginger
A few slices of onion
Apple cider vinegar
A few squirts of agave

Grind it up with your favorite hand veggie chopper or blend it in your fave mixer. Mince the ingredients as much or as little as you like. Pour the mix into a pot of boiling water and let it set for a while so all the oils and flavors have plenty of time to seep out.

base_media.jpeg
Pour the juice into a container (Use a strainer to retain the veggie pieces) and dilute it to your personal taste bud tolerance. You may like it stronger or weaker (more or less extra water), more bitter or sweet (as is or a touch more agave). Drink as a general daily tea to ward off the ookies or dose heavily to subdue them when they try to overcome you.

Try this for a while for your own benefit and see if you don’t shock your physician with improved readings on all of your statistics on your next visit.

Organizing the Work from Home Lifestyle: – Handling it All One Day at a Time

I’ve been working from home now for over 10 years and to be honest, it’s still a work in progress. Being organized and staying on top of deadlines is not only a task but it requires constant tweaking from time to time and a reassessment of where I need to be in relation to my goals.

Being organized and working from home can sound like an oxymoron. And some days it can feel like one too! When you work from home, no doubt you have other responsibilities that cry (literally) for your attention and attempt to zap any remaining energy that you have left. Not to sound negative, but to be realistic, and that is to be completely honest with you and tell you what to expect and how you can work around that thing called “Life.”

Here’s how:

  1. Plan your days the night before. Sit down and make a list of the things you need to accomplish for the next day. Be specific and be general. List any emails you need to return, calls you need to initiate and any work that needs to be completed. Write it down! If it’s in front of you, you are likelier to get it done and concentrate more on what’s in front of you than anything else.
  2. Focus, focus, focus. This is what I have on my desk right now as a reminder that everyday that I’m working, I must stay focused. Working from home is a challenge for some because of its lack of social interaction or other home distractions. It’s important to stay focused so that you can accomplish your daily goals and get the important things done. Even if you have to divide things up into chunks, it’s important to stay focused and driven on getting things done – - which brings me to the next item…
  3. Work in chunks. That’s right. Take the big project that you have due and divide it up into workable chunks. The worst thing that you can do is to try and have a “work-a-thon” where you attempt to get it all done in one day. That’s a mistake waiting to happen! The body gets fatigued and so does the mind. If your project is not ‘chunk-able’ then pace yourself on getting it done by working on it 30 minute to one-hour increments.
  4. Take frequent breaks. Pace yourself so you don’t get tired or bogged down in your work. Frequent breaks also help you to feel rejuvenated and help break the monotonous stress of long hours of work.

Since I have been following these simple, short bullets, I have found that my work production time has increased significantly. Staying focused, frequent breaks and chunking my work has helped me to gain more clients, produce more quality writing work and have an overall sense of accomplishment. Introducing these things into your work lifestyle can be a significant help for you as well. Production increases as does quality and performance. Give it a try for a short period of time and see if it helps your work at home lifestyle as well!

Tweets and Greets on Hootsuite

Thanks to Terry Crosby I figured out how to engage particular groups that I want to follow in list fashion on HootSuite. I can create a list – or a column as it is known on HoostSuite – using keyword phrases under the Keyword Tracking option. Then I can pick a person within the column to both follow and tweet a message to on the Hootsuite interface. It gives the option to make my choice of the Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn platforms to send the tweet simultaneously. Take a look at Terry’s tutorial for a quick lesson.

As for today’s activity in particular, I’m looking up other bloggers and social media experts who are attending Blogging While Brown in the Nation’s Capital this summer. My objective of course is to take the initiative in my real world networking by connecting virtually and touching base with potential new friends and business associates a few months ahead of time.

Also discovered today that the regular Twitter account allows you to create lists as well. The Blogging While Brown site has a list of attendees so I just followed the entire list (By the way why aren’t you on there already?) and now I’m following up with particular greetings to each of them.

So I encourage you to create a HoostSuite account today and spend some time learning the fundamentals. Create a few columns using keywords relevant to your blogging and social networking. Then work your columns in tandem with your favorite Twitter fan page lists and watch your contacts blossom.
