Come Along and Pack Your Bags

If it’s Tuesday it must be time for some funk and roll. Here is one of my favorite bands from back in the day. They open up with a strong bass riff that hooks you into a good head bop right off the bat. Then they pull you in with a kind of rap like intro that’s repeated a time or two just to keep your feet moving through out the song.

The staging for this video was pretty creative for its time. They literally brought the album cover to life. It’s Lakeside and this is “Fantastic Voyage”.

New Year Programing Refresher

I’m proud of myself for time well spent during the past holiday season. After passing my first Java course I spent the first week of the holiday learning more about Java applet programming. My text book touches on applets and GUI (graphical user interface) applications and we learned a lot about GUI’s – pronounced gooey like candy – during the semester. I wanted to learn more about the artsy side of the web applications of the language. With just a few slight changes in code, GUI’s and applets can be made interchangeable with each other. So that was fun and it kept my brain in gear with the subject matter.

I also freshened up my HTML and XHTML skills in week two. I want to be able to start customizing my blog more than I have in the past and be able to start new projects more capably in the future so this was also a beneficial exercise. I even coded in my practice applets into my practice web page. The HTML book I checked out touched on basic CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) the code that allows you to manipulate colors, fonts, layouts and other things that HTML wasn’t meant to beyond a certain point. You notice the two or three column layout now common to most sites? CSS creates that for you.

I have a separate CSS book that I checked out so as to learn it really well. Gonna have to find some other time to get into that one though now that the spring semester is in full swing again. So, what are you taking action on to improve your blogging and coding skills in 2008? Don’t stagnate jump into something new and learn an advanced online skill. Happy writing!

Developing a Closer Walk With God

Each year my pastor gives us a theme of the year. For 2007 is was “Developing A Christlike Attitude”. The theme for 2008 is “Developing A Closer Walk With God”. He gave us three key points to remember; 1. Watch who you associate with, 2. Be consistent in your Bible study and, 3. Be consistent in your prayer time.

The scripture reference for our new theme is 1 Thessalonians 4:1-12. Here’s the link to and printed text of the New International Version (NIV) translation of it:

————————

Living to Please God

1Finally, brothers, we instructed you how to live in order to please God, as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more. 2For you know what instructions we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus.

3It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; 4that each of you should learn to control his own body[a] in a way that is holy and honorable, 5not in passionate lust like the heathen, who do not know God; 6and that in this matter no one should wrong his brother or take advantage of him. The Lord will punish men for all such sins, as we have already told you and warned you. 7For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life. 8Therefore, he who rejects this instruction does not reject man but God, who gives you his Holy Spirit.

9Now about brotherly love we do not need to write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love each other. 10And in fact, you do love all the brothers throughout Macedonia. Yet we urge you, brothers, to do so more and more.

11Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business and to work with your hands, just as we told you, 12so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody.

——————-

Complimentary reference scriptures included Romans 8:29, 1 John 3:2 and James 4:7-8. The key thoughts of the sermon included the fact that we are to measure up to God’s standards, not the world’s and we are to walk in the light of God, not the world. A final point to remember was that worry leads to doubt and that runs counter to trusting God.

So how’s your faith walk in the new year? I encourage you to take a faith leap and live it better and more confidently than the last.

YouTube Embed Tutorial

It took buying “WordPress for Dummies” for me to learn about the YouTube embed in post process so here goes.

Wow, it’s simple. Find your favorite YouTube clip, click on the nondescript “Embed” label in the right column. The code for the clip will be hi-lited in blue. Then copy the code and paste it into your post. I feel like a smart cookie today.

Since it’s Sunday morning, let’s jam out to some Israel and New Breed throwing down on their hit “Again I Say Rejoice”.

There’s other cool stuff in the book that I’ll be sharing with my fellow WordPress users as I go along in my reading. This has been my first aha moment and there seem to be plenty more to come in the four or five key chapters that should prove to be effective in improving my blog design skills.

More to come later. Enjoy the video and share it with a few friends.

Obama Dominates 2008 Iowa Primaries

What a night, what a spanking, what a butt whipping of the pretenders to the throne! The presumed old guard is licking its wounds. The Obama lightning charge to the Whie House has begun.

According to NBS’s Thursday night Caucus polls many of the Baby Boomers and an overwhelming proportion of Gen-Xers and Gen-Yers want young blood at the reigns on Pennsylvania Avenue come January 2009. If that’s a trend that continues around the country then not only will the Clinton hegemony be broken in the Democrat party but the younger generations of the country will have displayed their national electoral civic duty en-masse for the first time in generations. See Tim Russert’s comments on this perspective.

Even female Iowans liked Obama more than Hellary. So much for the assumed theory of women jumping on her bandwagon just because she is one. They aren’t going for the fear mongering any more than men are. Nothing like a mature electorate – nothing. For those of you who thought the Oprah effect was a sham keep paying attention and continue to be amazed.

I’m proud of the 50 and younger crowd. Keep up the good work and continue to show your verve like you mean it. This is exactly the degree of momentum required to take the New Hampshire primaries next Tuesday. I’m confident the voters on the east coast want the same thing the midwesterners proved on Thursday – someone and something darn different from what we’ve had had these last few terms.

What did you think about the night’s events? How are you voting when election day comes around? Let’s talk and share some thoughts.
